Epic Games HQ in Cary, NC.

Epic Games, creator of the Gears of War series and the Unreal Engine, has bought eight acres of land near its Cary, North Carolina headquarters for the purposes of "future development."

According to a report from Triangle Business Journal, Epic paid $3.98 million to buy the tract.

Epic spokesperson Dana Cowley confirmed the land buy, but wouldn't comment on the company's specific plans for the acreage.

"We have no construction plans at this time," she said. "We are not commenting further right now."

In addition to its headquarters in Cary, Epic has domestic offices in Washington and Utah, as well as international offices in Poland, Korea, Japan, and England.

Last week at the Game Developers Conference, Epic announced that its Unreal Engine 4 is now free for everyone. In terms of upcoming titles, Epic is making PC shooter Fortnite and a new Unreal Tournament game, among others.

Epic sold the Ge ars of War franchise to Microsoft last year for an undisclosed sum. Microsoft is currently developing a new Gears of War game for Xbox One, though this title has not been shown publicly to date.
