[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Shaun Himmerick deleted his tweets that said Mortal Kombat X would not require PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold. As it turns out, you will need a membership to play online, just like you do with other games.

The original story is below.

Mortal Kombat X developer NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that users will not need a paid online membership to play the fighting game's online modes.

Producer Shaun Himmerick revealed the news on Twitter, saying, "PS Plus is not needed for any feature of MKX." He also confirmed that Xbox Live Gold is not required.

Of course, Mortal Kombat X fans will still need an Internet connection to play the game's online modes.

Current-generation console gamers have gotten used to paying extra to play games online. Many PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games require PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold memberships, which cost between $50 and $60 per year (though savvy shoppers can find better deals).

Online play is undergoing an overhaul for Mortal Kombat X. NetherRealm is introducing a new features such as Faction Wars and Living Towers. Find out more about those new modes through the video above.

The Mortal Kombat X release date is April 14. The game is coming to PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Just recently, we learned about the game's four collector's editions and how the game's female characters will be more realistically proportioned.
