The prospect of a Blood Dragon-styled spin-off for Far Cry 4 is off the table, one of the game's developers has suggested.
Alex Hutchinson, creative director at Ubisoft Montreal, said he hopes his team can surprise fans with another unique Far Cry offspring, but a direct sequel to Blood Dragon would not be the right approach.
Blood Dragon is an idiosyncratic, over-the-top homage to '80s and '90s action films. Its soaked-in-neon aesthet ic and well-observed movie caricatures helped win over critics, with GameSpot's Blood Dragon review declaring: "this action-packed shooter will strike all the right synth-pop power chords."
Speaking to IGN, Hutchinson appeared to suggest that the dev team wanted to make something as distinctive as Blood Dragon was when it was first announced in April 2013.
"That's was what was cool about [Blood Dragon], it was surprising. It was a great use of the Far Cry 3 base, and had an awesome soundtrack. But no, you won't get another one of those. But hopefully we'll be able to surprise you with something just as much."
Far Cry 4 launches on November 18 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
