One of the founding members of Halo and Destiny developer Bungie, Alex Seropian, has released a new sci-fi first-person shooter on Apple's App Store.
Midnight Star, which was developed at Seropian's new independent studio industrial Toys, is the latest bid to mix core game principles with mobile functionality and monetisation. The dev team describes it as a "re-imagining of the sci-fi shooter for touch devices".
The shooter is free-to-play, but is supplemented with in-app purchases for various it ems. The game takes inspiration from previous sci-fi shooters, which can be seen across its characters, settings, and gameplay design.
One of the game's key designers is Paul Bertone, who previously served on the design team for Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3.
Midnight Star's story is set 120 years into the future, taking players aboard a research vessel on a mission to explore a mysterious signal coming from within the Solar System.
The studio writes: "When disaster strikes, the ship's crew are transported across th e universe to take part in an epic war whose outcome will determine the fate of humanity."
